Five Questions with Dan Holbert

Dan Holbert
Vice President of Human Resources, Americas, Fortifi Food Processing Solutions
Where do you see optimal opportunities in the food processing industry for military veterans and spouses?
Any professional can benefit from the stability and purpose-driven profile of food processing careers, which offer long-term growth potential. This industry places high values on safety, leadership, teamwork, adaptability and operational discipline. All of these attributes are consistent with the profile of veterans who are transitioning out of successful military service and look to leverage their service in civilian work life. Along with taking leadership roles, veterans can make a noteworthy impact in operations, accounting and finance, human resources, supply chain, customer service and sales.
What are the biggest challenges that military members face in transitioning to civilian employment in manufacturing?
During their service, many veterans have built strong leadership skills, along with technical and operational aptitudes. Their challenge lies in translating their military titles and responsibilities into traditional civilian job descriptions and roles. Workplace cultures, communication styles and career progression differ between civilian life and the armed services, which may force some challenging adjustments as veterans join the workforce. This is an ideal opportunity for employers to identify transferable skills, minimize learning curves through veteran-friendly onboarding and development programs, and provide mentors to help veterans adapt to new opportunities.
As automation technology adoption increases in food production, what career roles do you see opening up?
Automation’s role in food processing continues to expand. The demand for technical roles that focus on robotics, automation, maintenance, PLC/control engineering, data analytics and advanced manufacturing operations will continue to grow. To fill these high-tech roles, manufacturers will need to focus their efforts to find technically skilled employees who can troubleshoot, program and optimize automated systems. Other career roles in continuous improvement, cyber security and operational technology support also will continue to be in demand.
Which personal strengths and attributes make the greatest impact in building manufacturing careers?
Adaptability, accountability and a strong work ethic characterize outstanding employees with the greatest impact in the manufacturing sector. As technology and business needs evolve, problem solving, teamwork and willingness to learn are critical aspects of success in manufacturing careers. Technical skills are essential, but a positive attitude, reliable work ethic and leadership potential offer the greatest long-term value for employees who seek success in these workplaces. Manufacturing environments value people who communicate well, take initiative and operate effectively in fast-paced, team-oriented settings.
Which new types of food processing careers will attract the most attention in the next five to 10 years?
The food processing industry needs the efficiencies and enhanced profit margins it can gain through automation and facility modernization. Technical competence and adaptability will enable workers to navigate careers that engage with technological change and evolving business needs. Many workplace roles that historically have relied on manual labor will give way to automation, robotics, AI and advanced manufacturing technologies, which will free the workforce from stressful and physically challenging tasks. In turn, these technologies will elevate the safety and satisfaction of food processing careers.
